From the East

What a great meeting last month with a great meal provided by our Senior Warden, Ken Ziehm and two of our newest Master Masons – Kevin Bailey and Ron Vincent. Thank you to all who helped cook and clean up!

It is always great to see the lodge room full and I want to thank everyone for coming out. From the feedback I received it sounds like everyone thought the programs were extremely beneficial from our SW, Ken Ziehm and RWDDGL Bob Porter presenting responsibilities and expectations of officers and members to RW Brother Gaskill who gave us another truly amazing story on the history of Rising Sun Lodge.

I am asking all members to try to make it to the Open House and our Stated Meeting in October, as I will not be around and our Brother Junior Warden will certainly need assistance. Please come out and support him during my absence.

Remembering September

Whenever September comes around
There’s a difference in the air

It’s hard to fathom what it is
You just somehow know it’s there

It may be days that are cooler
Or the activity of different birds

But there’s an exciting anticipation
That’s difficult to put into words

Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas
The upcoming holiday cheer

It may mean the closing of summer
Or the nearing end of another year

No matter what the reason
We have cause to remember September

September – by Hilaire Belloc

Lo! a ripe sheaf of many golden days
Gleaned by the year in autumn’s harvest ways,
With here and there, blood-tinted as an ember,
Some crimson poppy of a late delight
Atoning in its splendor for the flight
Of summer blooms and joys
This is September.

Summer is upon us and that means great warm weather, family fun, and our last stated meeting before we go dark for our summer break. That means our Hiatus Feast, with RWB Larry Gullett’s famous pulled pork, casual attire, flip-flops, Bermuda shorts and Hawaiian shirts ! Please ensure you invite your family and our special ladies to this great meal and fellowship event – we will have a brief meeting to take care of some business for roughly 30 minutes then retire upstairs to enjoy each other’s company.

Thank you to Iouri for another great meal at our May stated meeting as usual he outdid himself again !

Thank you to those brethren that attended Grand Lodge and also the Nashua Assembly Fine #9 installation of officers! Congratulations to Maddy Going on her retirement as Worthy Advisor having served 7 terms! What a great job she has done revitalizing Rainbow in Nashua. Also, congratulations to the newly installed Worthy Advisor Jackie Desrosiers and her new slate of officers – I am sure we will see great things continuing to come out of Nashua Assembly!

Remember although we go dark, we will still have plenty of opportunity to get together this summer after our Hiatus Feast with a MM on June 22nd, the Nashua Fairytale Festival, the Fishing Trip and the trek up to Nova Scotia for our annual exchange !

If you know of any brother or special lady that needs assistance please let one of our officers know.

ECHOES
by Douglas Malloch

Fine men have walked this way before,
Whatever Lodge your Lodge may be;
Whoever stands before the door,
The sacred arch of Masonry,
Stands where the wise, the great, the good,
In their own time and place have stood.

You are not Brother just with these,
Your friends and neighbors; you are kin
With Masons down the centuries;
This room that now you enter in
Has felt the trod of many feet,
For here all Masonry you meet.

You walk the path the great have trod,
The great in heart, the great in mind,
Who looked through Masonry to God,
And looked through God to all mankind;
Learned more that word or sign or grip,
Learned Man’s and God’s relationship.

To him who sees, who understands,
How mighty Masonry appears!
A Brotherhood of many lands,
A fellowship of many years,
A Brotherhood so great, so vast,
Of all the Craft of all the past.

And so I say a sacred trust
Is yours to share, is yours to keep;
I hear the voice of men of dust,
I hear the step of men asleep;
And down the endless future, too,
Your own shall echo after you.

April Showers have been scarce but Rising Sun is raining candidates and degree work. We are looking for individuals to learn the emblems for the MM degree history as we used to do in the past. If you are interested please see Larry Gullett or Jon Bibeau.

Congratulations to our 2 newest Master Mason’s Alexander Durden and Costin Barbu. We invite each of our newest Master Mason’s who have been raised in the last year to join us at Grand Lodge – it is the usual custom of the Grand Master to greet the newest members of our great fraternity.

To all – please consider making the venture up to Nova Scotia this July. We are in need of assistance and it would be great to have a wonderful showing in support of the fellowship we have shared for over 10 years with John Albro Lodge and our great friends there.

Finally, as Master and as a Member of Rising Sun, I find it incumbent upon me to challenge each of you to find a way you can assist your lodge. There are many tasks, duties, rituals and fundraising that needs your help. The benefits you and I have experienced in the degree work and fellowship are the direct result of sacrifice of those who sat in our seats over the past 194 years. What a great tradition !

THE LIVING TEMPLE
The Canadian Craftsman – March 1898

Rich was the Temple framed of old,
Of Hermon’s cedars, lined with gold,
By princely architect of Tyre:
And bright the flames of sun and fire,
Built many an hundred years ago,
In Ind or Western Mexico.

By fabrics formed by human hand,
Though they in noblest grandeur, stand
On lofty pillars, rich and rare.
Of burnished gold, can ne’er compare
With living temples, pure and fine,
Built by the Architect Divine.

Let us, who live in latter days,
To God a nobler temple raise,
With cornerstone deep laid in youth.
While knowledge, temperance and truth,
In all their fair proportion bind
That noble temple of the mind.

Let fortitude the basis be
And high resolve the plethory;
The stones shall be of reason’s proof,
Celestial love shall form the roof,
And prudence at the threshold stay
To drive each vagrant guest away.

Within shall seven pillars shine,
The purest product of the mine;
Religion, honor, gratitude,
Nor shall the moon and stars by night
Withhold their kind and needful light,
That your work may be finished here
When the Grand Master shall appear.

Happy Spring ! Even though we are only getting periods of warm days it appears we got off quite easy this year with the snow.

Congratulations to Iouri Starosselski who received the Crystal Cook award for his many outstanding performances in the kitchen in 2015. I would imagine he is in contention for 2016 as well based on his performances thus far. Anyone care to challenge him?? Thank you to Tim Marotte for doing an outstanding job lining up the talent in the kitchen for our stated meetings and coming up with this creative award.

Rising Sun continues to be busy almost every Wednesday with advancing new candidates. Officers please ensure you are working on your next potential stations, as if an officer in front of you is out you need to be prepared to step up.

We have scheduled these degrees and events far enough in advance and have posted them in the Trestleboard, posted them on Facebook and they should be on our website calendar. You should have ample time to schedule appropriately.

I greatly appreciate all the assistance from our membership on the sidelines and our Past Masters who have stepped up when needed.

This is our lodge brethren and it needs each one of us to step up and do something, anything, and to continue to improve so others can enjoy the same that we have ourselves.

If you have a topic of discussion for our stated meetings and would like to present it for discussion please give me a call.

ARE YOU A TRAVELING MAN?
I am a traveling man.
My journey is never ending.
I travel towards the East,
The source of all light.
The source of all knowledge.

I am a traveling man.
I wander a winding road.
With many twists and turns.
I know not what lies ahead.
I find new truth with every step.

I am a traveling man.
On a path from whose bourn no traveler returns.
The final destination is not the goal.
The goal is the odyssey itself,
And what I learn with every new vista.

I am a traveling man.
It is the only thing I know for sure.
My insatiable curiosity,
And desire for knowledge
Are my ever present companions on this trek.

Traveling.
Traveling.
Traveling.
Never weary
Never ending.

From the East

What a busy year so far, many thanks to all who supported our lodge. Especially to Ken Ziehm, Steve Bahsler, Larry Gullett, Dennis Webster, Joe Beaumont and all the rest who made our Fellowcraft Degree happy this past month while I was traveling. It looks like it will be the same case in March for the FC on March 9th as I will be traveling again for work.

We are very busy with degree work, fundraisers and activities – what a wonderful thing being a Mason is in this world. Look to the beehive my brothers – be industrious and find new ways to improve yourself in masonry. Be active and be part of our wonderful fraternity and family.

What a great presentation on the beginning of our lodge and Rising Sun’s Charter by our newly installed Lodge Historian, RW- Roger W. Gaskill who served our lodge for 47 years as secretary and is still running strong finding new ways to help. I look forward to the continuation and part 2 of Rising Sun from Brother Gaskill.

We also have our trip to Nova Scotia coming up in July, please see Larry Gullett or myself. It would be great to see a great showing this year ! Can we reach 40 Masons in attendance for this? I think we can – clear your schedules now.

March will surely be a busy month – please consider coming to the degree work and stated meeting which will include light, fellowship and fun. It continues to be a great spectacle seeing the sidelines full !

May God Bless and the Luck of the Irish be with you !

We will have a special presentation during our March meeting for our newly raised Master Masons – I encourage all to attend who have not had the opportunity to see Brother Tom Rizzo perform The Candle Light Charge also known as the Canadian Charge.

For the program we will open on the Master Mason degree and shortly after open up the meeting to any Fellow Crafts and Entered Apprentices if in attendance.

On Yonder Book Charge -written by M.W. Benjamin L. Hadley, P.G.M. (sometimes referred to as the “Candle Light Charge”), also, The Mason’s Vow and The Mason’s Pledge were published in The Poetry of Freemasonry 1876 by Rob Morris and again in 1885. The Mason’s Vow contains the refrain “On Yonder Book that Oath I took…etc.”

DO YOU JUST BELONG?
Are you an active member
the kind that would be missed
or are you just contented
that your name is on the list?

Do you attend the meetings
and mingle with the flock
or do you stay at home
and criticize and knock?

Do you take an active part
to help the work along
are you satisfied to be
the kind that “JUST BELONG”?

Do you ever go and visit
a member that is sick
or leave the work to a few
and talk about the clique?

Think this over, member,
you know right from wrong
are you an active member
or do you “JUST BELONG”?

Congratulations to the newly installed suite of officers for Rising Sun Lodge for the next year. I look forward to the plans and achievements they will make to our lodge during their tenure. I would ask that each member give their full support to each of them as they progress towards the Oriental Chair !

Congratulations to Lenny Perkins who led a fantastic presentation and discussion on Integrity and its ties to Freemasonry. Thank you to Larry Gullett who discussed the upcoming Nova Scotia trip in July as we venture northeast for what I believe is our 12th exchange with John Albro Lodge and our family there. This year’s trip will include a play that Mason’s and their significant others can both attend. It is sure to be a fun filled weekend with education and great friendships.

We have a very busy year coming up and congratulations to our two new Fellowcrafts who are already working on their lessons and progressing forward. We have an EA degree on February 3rd, FC on February 10th (if entitled), and a MM on February 24th which is our inspection from the DDGL. Please consider coming out to support our new brothers as they progress and enjoy some great times with your brethren.

Not sure how you can help your lodge? We have many activities and tasks that we are working on to help make our lodge stronger so future generations can benefit from it as we have.

Finally, with it being February and Valentine’s Day approaching, remember your loved ones and remind them how much you care about them and why. Happy Valentine’s Day and God Bless !

Valentine’s Day Fun Facts
Here is the most enjoyable and unbelievable collection of Valentine’s Day Fun Facts. Share these fun facts with your friends to amaze them this Valentine Day.

  • More than 36 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate are sold for Valentine’s Day each year.
  • On average, men shell out $130 each on candy, cards, jewelry, flowers and dates. That’s more than double what women commit to spending.
  • About 8 billion candy hearts will be produced this year; that’s enough candy to stretch from Rome, Italy to Valentine, Arizona 20 times and back again.
  • About 1 billion Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged in US each year. That’s the largest seasonal card-sending occasion of the year, next to Christmas.
  • Worldwide, over 50 million roses are given for Valentine’s Day each year.
  • Women purchase 85% of all valentines.
  • In order of popularity, Valentine’s Day cards are given to teachers, children, mothers, wives, sweethearts and pets.
  • 73% of people who buy flowers for Valentine’s Day are men, while only 27 percent are women.
  • Men buy most of the millions of boxes of candy and bouquets of flowers given on Valentine’s Day.
  • In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who their valentines would be. They would wear these names on their sleeves for one week. To wear your heart on your sleeve now means that it is easy for other people to know how you are feeling.
  • The Italian city of Verona, where Shakespeare’s lovers Romeo and Juliet lived, receives about 1,000 letters addressed to Juliet every Valentine’s Day.
  • Richard Cadbury invented the first Valentines Day candy box in the late 1800s.
  • Alexander Graham Bell applied for his patent on the telephone, an “Improvement in Telegraphy”, on Valentine’s Day, 1876.
  • The oldest surviving love poem till date is written in a clay tablet from the times of the Sumerians around 3500 BC.
  • In Medieval times, girls ate unusual foods on St Valentine’s Day to make them dream of their future husband.

Lodge Welcome to the Ladies
It is in our hearts, dear sisters,
While the Mason’s chain is bright,
To give our warmest welcome
To the best beloved, tonight;
To the wife, so fondly cherished,
To the daughter, sister, true,
To the faithful, tenderhearted—
Shall I say the word?—to you.

We acknowledge countless blessings
From the Bounteous Hand above;
Our bond was first cemented
By Divine assent and love;
We are grateful, truly grateful,
For all gifts He doth bestow,
But our warmest thanks are given –
Shall I say the word? – for you.

Our brotherhood is countless,
From the East unto the West;
In every land, and clime, and tongue,
They range among the best;
And every man a hundred miles
On frosty sod will go,
To give you help, or win a smile –
Shall I say the word? – from you.

Then hail! Adoptive Masonry,
That brings us here together;
May manly arms ‘round lovely forms
Protect from Stormy weather;
And when, adown the hill of life,
Our tottering feet shall go,
May our weary steps be comforted –
Shall I say the word? – by you.

Brethren – as we finish 2015 and say good bye to some fond memories and some of our Masonic Brothers, I would like to thank each of your for the efforts you have put forth both in lodge and in your own lives to represent Rising Sun and Freemasonry !

Congratulations to all of the officers for 2015 and I look forward to working with each of the officers in 2016 in continuing to build our lodge, making it more sustainable for future generations. Special thank you to Roger Gaskill for his over 50 years of service as Secretary and Associate Secretary! Rising Sun is truly fortunate to have such a jewel within our lodge and I look forward to having him as our Lodge Historian ! Part of his role will be to continue to assist the Secretary and newly elected Associate Secretary.

We have a busy schedule coming up in the beginning of the year with an EA degree on January 6th and February 3rd as well as a FC on January 13th.

Our trip to Nova Scotia this year will be the weekend after the 4th of July and is promising to be another great time of fellowship with our friends northeast of us. We invite each of you and your significant other to join us !

I hope each of you have enjoyed some well-deserved time off during the holiday season and I would like to wish each of you a Happy New Year that is filled with love, health, happiness, and prosperity !

2015 as Worshipful Master has been a wonderful year filled with accomplishment, fellowship, love, and challenges. I look forward to 2016 with even greater success!

Happy new year!
2016 on the beach

Νew Years come and New Years go,
Pieces of time all in a row.
As we live our life, each second and minute,
We know we are privileged to have you in it.
Our appreciation never ends
For our greatest blessings:
Our family and friends.

MASONIC NEW YEARS RESOLUTION
As we see out 2015 and welcome in a New Year, many will use this period as a time of reflection. At this time we would do well to remember that although Masonry is known as a “Progressive Science”, it should also be viewed as a “Reflective Science”. The true purpose of Masonry is to gain knowledge of oneself, and of one’s own relationship with his God. We should use our Lodge time as a place to think, to consider our fellow-man, and to gain wisdom. Looking inward is the place to begin, to evaluate shortcomings with respect to our obligation, and our charges and commitment to the working tools of each degree.

You might ask yourself what did I do in 2015, and what can I do to make 2016 Masonically better? Did I hold true to my values all year long? Did I lose a friend through lack of communication? Did I visit and help brothers in need often enough? Did I do all that was required of me in time of need? Did I listen to those brothers who asked for my advice as well as to those that whispered council in my own ear? Did I make new friends? Did I create any enemies? Did I leave something undone that I could have finished? These are but some of the questions one could ask of oneself.

Congratulations to Larry Gullett, John Woodrow, and Peter Shulkin for receiving the Rising Sun Quarry Award for their work in Masonry and for continuously going above and beyond in support of their lodge and community.

Thank you to our officers for a great year and for all their support of our lodge and myself. The past year has been filled with many high and low notes for our lodge and we continue press onward and upward to progress our lodge forward. We have exciting times before us and we have the opportunity to make a tremendous difference in our lodge, community, freemasonry and the world! BUT – we need your help.

Ask not what your lodge can do for you, but what you can do for your lodge!

Stay warm this winter and may your holiday season be filled with love, laughter and cheer! Enjoy this special time with your family and friends

THE PERSON IN THE GLASS
When you get what you want in your struggle for self,
And the world makes us King for a day,
Just go to the mirror and look at yourself,
And see what that person has to say.
For it isn’t your father, mother, husband, or wife,
Whose judgment upon you must pass:
The person whose verdict counts most in your life,
Is the one staring back from the glass.
He is the person to please, never mind the rest,
For he is with you right up to the end,
And you’ve passed your most dangerous difficult test,
If the person in the glass is your friend.
You may fool the whole world down the pathway
Of years and get pats on the back as you pass,
But your final reward will be heartaches and tears,
If you’ve cheated the person in the Glass.

Dale Wimbrow, 1895-1954

Brethren – truly a great stated meeting this past month with 2 visitors from New Mexico and Florida – it is great to see visitors at our lodge. I could not have been more proud as Master with the compliments we received extending courtesies to our guests. Also, thank you to Ed Waible for the wonderful meal with the help of Ken Ziehm and Peter Shulkin. Thank you to all those that helped and also made the clean-up easy for them.

This month we have our stated meeting and 2 final visitations before our own on December 9th. Please see the calendar of events. Let’s try to get some new brothers out to the visitations to see if we can show up in some impressive numbers in support of our DDGM and DDGL which are Past Masters of Rising Sun Lodge.

Officers please be ready with your parts for the EA Degree and also the Master Mason Opening. On December 2nd we have an EA degree for two newly voted on members.

We will be having Thanksgiving Dinner at the Lodge beginning at 2:00pm but I know RW Bro Gullett will be there earlier than that preparing our feast. You and your families are invited and there is no cost. Please make a reservation as quickly as possible.

Lastly – think back on your month, your day and this year as it is now coming to a close, did you make a difference in someone’s life? Did you help a brother in need? Masonry is a wonderful organization, the fellowship is only part of what we share as we part upon the square, what is great indeed is our charity which is our creed.

“I have walked with people whose eyes are full of light but see nothing in sea and sky, nothing in city streets, nothing in books.

It were far better to sail in the night of blindness with sense, and feeling and mind than to be content with the mere act of seeing. The only lightless dark is the night in ignorance and insensibility.”

BY THE WORK YOU DID TODAY
Can you say tonight in parting
with the day that’s slipping past
That you helped a single brother
of the many that you passed?
Is a single heart rejoicing
over what you did and said?
Does the man whose hopes where fading,
Now with courage look ahead?
Did you waste the day or lose it,
Was it well or poorly spent?
Did you leave a trail of kindness,
Or a scar of discontent?
As you close your eyes in slumber,
Do you think God will say,
You have earned one more tomorrow,
By the work you did today
